Motorists win big as Kenya Revenue Authority move to increase excise duty on fuel is halted

Justice James Makau, on Monday, stopped the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) move to increase the excise duty on fuel with effect from October 1, 2021.

On August 12, 2021 KRA informed consumers ‘KRA would like to remind manufacturers and importers that the Finance Act, 2021 introduced excise duty on the various products with effect from 1st July, 2021.

Mr Makau warned of ‘danger to Kenyans’ in the proposed further increase of fuel prices.

Ufanisi Centre, a lobby group in Korogocho represented by lawyer Ken Amondi went to court saying KRA and sector regulator, EPRA ignored proper public participation before adjusting the excise duty rates.
